Read Matthew 23:1 through 24:51
Little Jimmy was asked in Sunday School to quote a Scripture regarding the sin of lying. “Lying is an abomination to God,” he said, “and a very present help in time of trouble.” This is a humorous story, but one that aptly describes the attitude of today’s culture toward character, integrity, lying, and hypocrisy.
“So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. . . . Everything they do is done for people to see” (Matthew 23:3,5).
Our culture chooses its own code of what is honest and dishonest. Culture’s code often deviates from God’s standards. Jesus called participants in the world of lies and hypocrisy a “generation of vipers.” Today, as a follower of Christ, determine to be an honest person, following biblical principles. That includes principles of honesty and integrity.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY: Many Christians today worry about what people think about them, more than they worry about taking God’s Word seriously.
