Worried? Stop, Breathe, Pray

Read Genesis 31:1 through 32:32

News of Esau’s pending arrival terrified Jacob, and with good cause. Jacob had stolen his brother’s blessing by deception and trickery. Esau had sworn to kill him. Twenty years later, Jacob worried that his brother was still seeking revenge. After all, why would Esau be approaching with four hundred men? Jacob strategized to protect his family, but then he stopped and prayed.

“Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children” (Genesis 32:11).

Daily headlines scream tragic, shocking, or threatening news: a multi-car accident, a terrorist attack on a school, a disease outbreak. In our digital age, news out- lets can report incidents from around the globe immediately. Danger seems to be all around.

Worry is a sign of fear. When it is impossible to settle your mind, follow Jacob’s example and call on God. He is never too busy or too far away to hear you. And He can handle whatever you’re facing.

Prayer Suggestion: God, please help me to overcome my fear and rely on You.
