Read 1 Samuel 23; Psalms 54:1–7; 63:1–11
Pam greeted the class with trepidation. This is going to be tough, she thought. The first year of teaching school is challenge enough in itself. Add to that the pain of a divorce process and three teenagers to raise alone, and you have a recipe for certain distress. That was Pam’s situation.
A fellow teacher, Sue, took Pam under her wing. Every day Sue was there with a hug or smile, and a listening ear. Pam later confessed to Sue that if it hadn’t been for her friendship, she wouldn’t have made it through the year.
Years ago, David found himself facing a tough situation. Not only did he have the challenge of eluding Saul, but now he had to deal with treacherous friends. Hiding again, David experienced another low point. However, God was mindful of him and sent an encourager.
Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God (1 Samuel 23:16).
At times everyone needs encouragement. By being a Sue or a Jonathan, you can make a difference in a person’s life. By offering a smile, hug, or card, or just being there to listen, you can help lift someone above the difficulties they face.
Challenge for Today: Be someone’s encourager.
