The Good Old Days

Read Ecclesiastes 5:1 through 7:29

Do not say, “Why were the old days better than these?” For it is not wise to ask such questions (Ecclesiastes 7:10).

“The Good Old Days.” “Golden Oldies.” “Things were better back then.” These expressions frequently find their way to the lips of well-meaning people. Rarely satisfied by their life situations, humans have a tendency to consider the past as better than the present and ask why.

Yet the Word of God declares it is not wise to ask why. To ask why is to question the wisdom, love, and sovereignty of God. To ask why is to focus on the circumstances and not on the God who controls the circumstances. To ask why is to walk in unbelief rather than by faith.

One of Satan’s chief lies is that life is always better in another place or another time. The truth is that every phase of life has its ups and downs, and every phase of life is a gift of time for which to be thankful.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY:

Are you asking God why about a particular situation? If so, stop asking why and start thanking Him in the midst of the situation.
