Power from Heaven

Read Luke 24:1–53

Electricity makes life in the modern world possible. Without it, lights don’t come on at the flick of a switch, microwaves and refrigerators don’t work. Radios and television sets can’t bring us the news or entertain us. Modern appliances can’t work without power, and neither can a Christian.

As Jesus made His final address to His apostles, He told them the gospel would be preached to all the world. As important as that mission was, and still is today, Jesus for[1]bade the apostles to leave Jerusalem until they had received power from heaven (Luke 24:49). That power, known as the baptism in the Holy Spirit, gave the apostles the boldness they needed to preach to huge crowds and to teach about Jesus when confronted by angry leaders who had the power to execute them.

While most of us may never face those situations, we still need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit if we are to have the boldness and power we need to do our part in sharing the truth about Jesus with our world—the people we meet on the street, at the supermarket, and at the mall.

CHALLENGE FOR TODAY:

Resolve to seek the baptism in the Holy Spirit; then pray in tongues frequently after you do.
