Matter of the Heart

Read Amos 5:1 through 9:15

Kim and her sister Anne lacked for little, physically speaking. Since their parent’s divorce 7 years prior, their mom and dad seemed to be almost in competition—seeing who could win the girls’ affection by outgiving the other. While this tactic left the girls’ closets full, it unfortunately left their hearts in a much different state.

Away with the noise of your songs! I will not listen to the music of your harps (Amos 5:23).

Have you ever, like Kim and Anne’s parents, been tempted to ply the Lord with gifts of your own in an effort to earn His approval? Maybe you spend hours a week volunteering at the church. Or perhaps you are always the first to make a pledge at the annual missions banquet. Do you put your best foot forward while denying Him a heart full of love and humble devotion?

In the New Testament, Paul wrote us that our good deeds— even those as noble as prophecy and supernatural faith—matter little to the Lord if we lack a loving heart before Him (1 Corinthians 13:2).

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Test my motives, Lord. May my heart be pleasing to You.
