Read Numbers 24:1 through 25:18
History washes over the masses of humanity, obliterating all traces of the individual. Civilizations rise and fall, and men unleash cruelty upon each other as they have done for ages. What power can one person wield against the overwhelming power of history? Ask Moses. Ask Paul. Ask Copernicus or Martin Luther or Abraham Lincoln or Rosa Parks. One individual can change history, save a nation, even stay the hand of God.
“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal” (Numbers 25:11).
One man took action when others were content with the status quo, and he changed the fate of a nation. Though few of us will be remembered in history books, each of us can affect another person’s life for the better as living reminders that humanity doesn’t have to settle for the sin-cursed status quo of history. Through us, God can step into this world and change lives.
