Healthy Fear

Read Psalms 127:1 through 129:8

Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours (Psalm 128:1,2).

We don’t usually think of fear as being healthy. Some people have excessive fears—of going outdoors or being trapped in small spaces. People fear many things like dogs, heights, or speaking in public. These fears make us anxious, tense, and uncertain.

When the Bible tells us to fear God, it is talking about a different kind of fear. Another definition of fear, according to Webster, is awe or reverence. This passage urges us to respect God, revere Him, and be in awe of His mighty power. Sometimes churches promote an attitude of “Jesus is our buddy,” but that is only part of the story. While the Gospels teach us that Jesus is our friend, it is not a bad thing to be in awe of God.

The results of fearing or respecting God are good ones. As we revere God, we obey Him. As we obey, blessings and prosperity in all areas of our lives follow.

Prayer Suggestion:
Lord, help us to fear You in a proper way and to have a greater desire to walk in Your ways.
