God’s Gift of Work

Read Ecclesiastes 5:1 through 7:29

A 2012 survey found that 65 percent of people are dissatisfied with their jobs. Reasons for this include being underpaid, limited career growth and advancement, lack of interest, poor management, job insecurity, poor communication, and unpleasant coworkers. Many do not feel appreciated or adequately rewarded for their performance. How different is the teacher’s advice in Ecclesiastes:

Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God (Ecclesiastes 5:19).

God has given humans the gift of work. He intended it to be a joy not a drudgery. From the beginning, labor was part of God’s plan for people. Faithful commitment to work, whatever it may be, has eternal consequences.

So, even if you find yourself in a dead-end job, commit it to the Lord. Ask Him to bless your work and your relationships there. Serve well and seek to find joy in each day. True satisfaction comes from Him.

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Dear Lord, help me to do my work well and to be a blessing in it.
