Free from Harm

Read Psalms 120:1 through 135:21

The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life (Psalm 121:7).

What a promise! This verse from Psalm 121 inspires visions of an idyllic life with no pains or troubles. But it can also cause Christians to ask, “Why isn’t my life free from harm?”

A seventeen-year-old girl named Joni Eareckson may have asked that question when her dive into shallow water resulted in the permanent paralysis of her arms and legs. Why would God allow that?

Joni had received Christ three years earlier. Yet, by high school graduation, youthful temptations and dreams were drawing her away from Jesus. Realizing she was in a bad place, Joni asked God to stop her wandering.

Now, nearly fifty years after Joni’s accident, she believes the physical harm she suffered was an answer to prayer, sending protection from spiritual harm. In her current state of total dependence on physical help, she has also become totally dependent on Jesus. Joni’s body may be limited, but, as she sits in God’s presence, her spirit soars on eagle’s wings.

PRAYER SUGGESTION: God, please protect me from spiritual harm.
