Don’t Ride with Pride

Read Isaiah 14:1 through 18:7

Pride comes so naturally that people hardly notice it in their lives. It’s fine to take joy in personal accomplishments, but not to allow those feelings to morph into conceit or self-absorption. Pervasive pride seems to be the curse of modern society, with so much focus on: What’s in it for me? How does this make me feel?

God takes notice of pride, and He does not like what He sees. The Bible often warns against pride or speaks of God’s judgment of the proud. Left unchecked, pride can lead to ignoring God and rebelling against Him, as did the nation in Isaiah’s day.

We have heard of Moab’s pride—how great is her arrogance!—of her conceit, her pride and her insolence; but her boasts are empty (Isaiah 16:6).

One of the common targets mentioned in these prophecies of judgment against the nations is pride. As Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” So beware and be aware. When pride preens and prods, push it aside. You don’t want to ride anywhere pride drives.

PRAYER SUGGESTION: Ask God to help you put away pride.
