Read Matthew 27:1 through 28:20
Sean’s grandmother showed him some of the letters her husband had written to her while serving in the army overseas. “He wrote to me almost every day. Sometimes the wait seemed unbearable, but I knew your grandfather was doing his best not only to fight the battle but to return to me as well. I’ll never forget the day he walked back into this house,” Grandma said, pointing to a faded photograph on the wall. “No more distance.”
At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51).
In the architecture of the temple, God vividly demonstrated how sin separated people from His presence. A tall, thick curtain hid the holiest place from everyone but the high priest—and even he was allowed to enter only once a year, with the blood of the sacrifice (Hebrews 10:3). When God tore the curtain in two from top to bottom, He showed that there is no more separation and no more distance between people and Him. The death and resurrection of Jesus has brought Christians near to God forever!
